A pump impeller’s shape serves a hydraulic design, but the manufacturing route must also provide usable passages, accurate interfaces and the required inspection evidence. Investment casting can be evaluated for that geometry. It should not be assumed to improve pump performance merely because it produces a detailed shape.
Preserve the hydraulic geometry through manufacturing review
Vanes and passages should be reviewed for casting, cleaning and inspection access. Any proposed change to a profile or junction needs approval from the responsible pump designer because seemingly small changes can affect the intended geometry.
The foundry should know which surfaces are critical and which local adjustments may be considered. This allows a manufacturing proposal to address difficult features without silently changing the hydraulic design.
Establish the hub and running interfaces deliberately
The bore, seating faces and other interfaces may require machining to fit the shaft and assembly. Their datum relationships should be defined so the machined features align with the approved impeller geometry.
Consider the route from the rough casting to final inspection. Workholding and available stock should support those relationships instead of relying on an arbitrary outer cast contour as the reference for every operation.
Specify cleanliness and balance as actual requirements
Internal passages need an agreed condition at delivery. Retained material or inaccessible regions should be addressed in the manufacturing and inspection plan. A photograph of the outside surface cannot demonstrate internal cleanliness.
Where balancing is required, identify the governing requirement, delivery condition and responsibility for the operation. A machined bore or a visually symmetrical casting does not by itself establish that the impeller meets a balance requirement.
Connect material selection to the pumped medium
The specified alloy should suit the medium, temperature and other service requirements established by the pump designer. The casting route and any treatment must supply that approved material condition with the required records.
