Machining allowance is material intentionally left on a casting so cutting can establish the required finished surface. It is not a general cure for every dimensional variation. The allowance should be planned together with the locating scheme, machining sequence and condition of the casting supplied to the machine shop.
Begin with the first reliable locating surfaces
The initial setup must establish the part before finished datums exist. Decide which cast features provide a practical reference and whether they need special control or preparation. A generous allowance is of little value if the blank cannot be located consistently.
For a housing, the relationship between the first machined face and subsequent bores can determine the entire route. The drawing package should distinguish the raw references from the finished datums used for final inspection.
Allow for cleanup without ignoring the surrounding wall
The cutting operation must remove enough material to produce the specified surface while leaving the required finished section. Casting variation and any distortion should be considered in that review. Simply adding stock inward and outward without checking the final wall can create a new problem.
Particular attention is useful around intersecting bores, flanges and thin connections. These features may have less room for corrective machining than a broad external face.
Coordinate heat treatment and machining stages
The condition in which a blank is machined can affect the route and the inspection sequence. Clarify which operations occur before and after the specified treatment and how the component will be checked at the relevant stages.
If different suppliers perform casting and machining, make the handoff explicit. Both need to agree the blank dimensions and locating requirements rather than assuming that the other party will compensate for an undefined condition.
Quote the blank and the finished component consistently
An enquiry should state whether Tousin Metal is asked to supply a casting blank or the complete machined part. Include the finished drawing and any separate blank requirement. This helps prevent duplicated allowance or disagreement over which dimensions govern receiving inspection.
The drawing enquiry can identify the critical machining interfaces and expected supply condition. A deliberate stock plan supports reliable setups and finished geometry, while avoiding unnecessary metal removal on surfaces that do not need it.
